Sonar AS is a herbicide that controls unwanted weeds in your lake or pond. A single treatment can last for a year or more. If you’re looking for a reliable pond weed killer, few aquatic herbicides match the effectiveness of Sonarโespecially in the way it manages duckweed.ย
Unlike many other aquatic herbicides, Sonar allows unrestricted water use after application. It is safe for swimmers, anglers, and livestock*.ย
Trust your pond with the proven effectiveness of Sonar aquatic herbicide. Reclaim water bodies of all sizes with these time-tested methods and materials developed by SePRO scientists.ย
The Sonar herbicide is an aquatic weed control solution that targets invasive and undesirable vegetation in ponds and lakes. Its unique formula inhibits plant carotenoid production, effectively starving them of nutrients.ย
Unlike contact herbicides that act quickly but provide only short-term results, Sonar ensures long-lasting control with just one or two applications per season. This makes it a cost-effective and reliable choice for maintaining healthy aquatic environments.
For over fifteen years, Sonar has been the top choice for professional aquatic applicators from Florida to California. Combining cost-efficiency with proven results, Sonar offers selective, long-term control of invasive and undesirable weeds. As a recognized world leader in aquatic plant management, SePRO ensures Sonar aquatic herbicide meets the highest standards.ย
Yes, Sonar is safe for fish and other aquatic wildlife when used as directed. Its slow-acting formula reduces the risk of oxygen depletion, which can be a problem with faster-acting herbicides. This results in minimal disruption to your pond’s ecosystem. Treated water remains safe for recreational activities like swimming and fishing, as well as for livestock consumption*.ย

Sonar AS selectively manages undesirable aquatic vegetation for a year or longer and is recommended for use in water bodies with soft or muck bottoms. Sonar AS, or Aqueous Solution, is easy to apply, and just one application will provide season-long enjoyment for your pond.ย
Sonar AS is available for immediate uptake into the target plants and is the ideal choice in water bodies with minimal water flow and when targeting strands of floating vegetation such as duckweed. Water treated with Sonar AS will not harm any wildlife in or around your pond and can be used immediately for swimming or fishing.
Sonar AS can be applied starting in early spring, at the first sign of weeds floating to the surface, through midsummer.
The best control is obtained when discharge can be stopped for thirty days or longer. Pond levels should be at or near normal when treated. Excessive outflow dilutes Sonar AS and reduces the chance of control. Outflow can be reduced by lowering the pond level before treating it with a siphon made from a rubber or PVC pipe.
The dose for the first Sonar AS application is normally one (1) quart per surface acre, depending upon depth (see product label). Use 1 1/2 quarts of Sonar AS per surface acre for watermeal.
The labeled rate for Sonar AS should be split and applied in two applications about 10โ14 days apart. For small ponds, application can be made from the bank or in the middle if possible.ย
If you do not have access to a small sprayer, simply dilute the product in a large container with water according to labeled rates and empty directly into the pond. Be sure to triple-rinse the container and pour the wash water back into the pond.ย
If using a sprayer, place the nozzle underneath the water surface and apply. This is often referred to as an injection application.ย
Spray in a straight stream directly in the water (do not โmistโ on top of plants such as duckweed and watermeal). Sonar AS doesn’t need direct contact with the plants for effective control. If the infestation is heavy and the weeds form a dense, thick mat on the water, disperse the weeds to get the product directly into the water.
Plants should start turning white as control begins in 15 to 30 days. It may take 30 to 90 days for final results. This slow rate of control is beneficial as it greatly decreases the chance of a severe change in oxygen levels, which can harm fish.
Safe for swimming, fishing, boating, or livestock use. Some precautions may apply for irrigation. See product label for complete details.
