Keeping a pond clean doesn’t have to be a full-time job, and there are many easy ways to maintain or improve water quality without resorting to the use of chemical-based pond cleaners. The following pond maintenance tips can help you keep your pond in great shape throughout the year, even during the warmest months.

Often, at the start of the warm season, your pond may seem like it’s in good shape. You might not see signs of floating organic material or an abundance of pond weeds, etc. This is the perfect time to enlist some preventative measures to ensure that your pond water remains healthy as the temperatures begin to climb.

Beneficial Bacteria Treatments – A Natural Pond Cleaner

Monthly treatment with our all-natural pond cleaner, AquaSpherePRO®, is an easy step that can help maintain water quality. The AquaSpherePRO® is a biodegradable sphere filled with beneficial bacteria for ponds.

Once you toss a sphere into your pond, it sinks to the bottom and begins releasing beneficial bacteria. Simply toss in enough spheres to accommodate the gallons of water in your pond, and each sphere will release beneficial bacteria for 30 days, and then you just add new spheres.

Using a natural pond cleaner is always the best option whenever possible and beneficial bacteria can improve water quality without the use of harsh chemicals. The bacteria in the AquaSpherePRO® consume excess nutrients in your pond, reducing sludge, odors and floating green organic matter.

Adding Natural Blast®, another of our beneficial bacteria pond cleaners is another easy way to improve or maintain water quality. We recommend adding Natural Blast® along with AquaSpherePRO® to your pond at the beginning of your warm season to ensure that your pond water has plenty of beneficial bacteria. You cannot overtreat the water with beneficial bacteria, but you can undertreat, so it’s important to ensure that you have an adequate amount of beneficial bacteria to compensate for the approximate gallons of water in your pond.

Natural Blast® also can be added to the water whenever temperatures suddenly spike or when your area experiences a large rain event. We also recommend adding this product any time you notice signs of floating green organic matter forming on the surface of your pond. Natural Blast® is contained in water-soluble bags that you toss evenly throughout the water, near aeration when possible.

AquaSpherePRO® and Natural Blast® are safe for fish, wildlife, pets and people. Our all-natural pond cleaners are ideal for water features of all sizes, including:

  • Golf Course Pond Maintenance
  • Community Pond Maintenance
  • Farm Pond Maintenance
  • Koi Pond Maintenance
  • Ornamental & Garden Pond Maintenance

Controlling Water Temperature

When water temperatures increase, this can cause a drop in oxygen levels and warm water is the perfect breeding ground for floating green organic matter. Maintaining a healthy water temperature is crucial, and there are several ways to ensure that the water in your pond stays within the sweet spot of about 68 to 74 degrees. This is important for any water feature, but it is essential for any ponds stocked with fish, as high temperatures and a drop in oxygen levels can lead to fish kills.

Pond aeration, especially when combined with our natural pond cleaners, can help maintain a healthy balance in your pond. Aeration also circulates the water in your pond, and this can help reduce the water temperature. The aerator will pull the cooler water from the bottom of the pond, and this will mix with the warmer surface water. When installing an aeration system, it’s typically best to use a bottom diffusion aerator and ensure that the aerator is powerful enough to easily circulate all of the water in your pond twice within 24 hours. Aeration also provides more even dispersal of beneficial bacteria, which makes pond management even easier.

With a shallow pond, a surface aerator, such as a fountain, can be adequate. For larger, less shallow ponds, bottom diffusion works best, but there is no reason why you can’t install both a bottom diffusion aerator as well as a surface aerator, such as a bubbler or fountain, as these are pleasant water features and can enhance the look of your pond. Our natural beneficial bacteria pond cleaners are more effective when used in conjunction with aeration.

Other ways to control temperature would be to provide a source of shade for your pond, such as planting a few trees or beneficial plants around the perimeter or perhaps installing a shade sail. These tips work well for smaller ponds, such as koi ponds or backyard ponds.

You also can add pond dye to your pond water. Pond dye improves the aesthetics of your pond water and will block some UV rays, which also can help keep temperatures down. If your pond is experiencing any issues with floating green organic matter or perhaps a heavy sludge layer, we recommend holding off on adding dye until the water quality has improved. With a heavy sludge layer, beneficial bacteria can reduce this muck, but, in some cases, you may need to consider using a pond vacuum or even dredging your pond and then use aeration and beneficial bacteria to help prevent a new sludge layer from forming.

Heavily-Matted & Stagnant Ponds

While the aforementioned tips will help you prevent issues from occurring, if you are already experiencing pond problems, you may need to take additional steps. In some cases, adding aeration and treating with AquaSpherePRO and Natural Blast can solve the issue, but for a pond matted with floating green organic matter, we recommend using our product Rush®.

Rush® offers an alternative to chemical products and can be used along with our natural pond cleaner products AquaSpherePRO® and Natural Blast®. Rush® is a granular oxidizer that breaks down floating organic matter. Rush® also can be a good option for stagnant ponds with a green pea soup color or ponds emitting foul odors.

Typically, you will need to apply several treatments of Rush® to mitigate your pond problems. Be sure to follow the product directions carefully, and if you have any questions about Rush® or any of our natural pond cleaners, feel free to get in touch with us at any time.
