Where Does Algae Come From?

Some of the most common sources that contribute to algae come from areas that are all around our ponds. Think of leaves, grass clippings, surface runoff after storms, and animal droppings – these are the organic materials that eventually form the excess nutrients that lead to algae.

When temperatures increase, anything organic that sinks to the bottom of the pond will decay and decompose. This process then releases nutrients that algae feed off of. The process of algae blooming, decaying and decomposing is a continuous cycle – as seen in the diagram below.

When you need to prevent algae and excess nutrients, you may decide to use a chemical solution. If you treat your algae with a chemical you’re simply not solving the whole problem. Trying to prevent algae with a chemical only knocks the algae to the bottom of the pond. Eventually, you will develop algae in your pond once again, as the organic matter you treated begins to decay.

Having algae once is enough frustration for anyone! Don’t waste your time with a half-solution, doing the same thing over and over – it’s time to turn to Healthy Ponds® for a program that will work completely different than chemicals and keep your pond free and clear of green organic matter.

How To Break The Cycle

If your pond algae problem is severe enough to where it requires you to treat with a chemical, we understand. Although we are an all-natural company, we do carry a line of chemicals, but do not confuse the chemicals we sell with our all-natural products. Healthy Ponds natural products are not classified as Algaecides. Healthy Ponds has a variety of chemical products that effectively kill algae. These pond chemicals were carefully selected, and most are compatible with our all-natural products.

After you begin treatment with a chemical product, we recommend that 15 days later you follow up with a Healthy Ponds AquaSpherePRO in your pond. The AquaSpherePRO helps consume the excess nutrients that the chemicals knocked down to the bottom, helping you to break that vicious cycle. The Healthy Ponds beneficial bacteria feed on the excess nutrients.

Put in a new AquaSpherePRO every 30 days. The AquaSpherePRO can treat between 1,000 to 2 million gallons – it’s an amazing tool that will help you reduce the excess nutrients. It introduces beneficial bacteria into the water and will treat fresh water ponds and lakes for up to 30 days. The spheres are biodegradable, so no need to remove them from the pond.

We also recommend that you use a Healthy Ponds Supplement with the sphere for the first month or two. Our supplements treat the water in your pond or lake naturally. After your pond has achieved the clarity that you desire, we recommend that you use a Healthy Ponds colorant in your pond. The colorant not only gives the pond a nice color it keeps the water temperatures cooler.

Excess nutrients and green organic growth can take all the fun out of having a pond. It dirties the water and the odor is annoying. It doesn’t have to be that way. With Healthy Ponds, you can treat the excess nutrients in a natural way.
