Spring has sprung, and this is the perfect time to tackle many seasonal yard tasks as well as to ensure your pond is in top shape before the sweltering heat of summer arrives. At Healthy Ponds, we have all-natural pond treatment products and some helpful lawn and garden products that can transform your pond, lawn and garden without the use of harsh chemicals.

Spring Pond Treatment

As the air temperature begins to rise, so does the water temperature in your pond, and if you aren’t ready for the changes, this can lead to some common pond water issues, such as the rapid accumulation of floating green organic matter in your pond.

For your spring cleaning, we first recommend that you skim away any leaves and debris from the surface of the pond so they cannot sink to the bottom and form a sludge layer. It also is important to ensure that your pond aeration system is in good working order and make any necessary repairs.

If you don’t have an aeration system in place, this can be a good time to consider adding one to your pond as this helps disperse our pond treatment products, improves the oxygen level in your pond and can help keep water temperatures a bit lower during the warmest months of the year. An aeration system, combined with the following products, can make pond management much easier.

At this point, we recommend adding beneficial bacteria for ponds. Our AquaSpherePRO® product is a natural, easy-to-to-use pond treatment that you simply toss into your pond. Adding this product can be your first step in the pond treatment process. At the start of your warm season, we also recommend adding our Natural BLAST® product.

Natural BLAST® can be used in conjunction with AquaSpherePRO® and it also contains a proprietary mix of beneficial bacteria. Adding this product in early Spring ensures that your pond has a healthy dose of beneficial bacteria to consume any excess nutrients in your pond, which can start to accumulate due to higher temperatures, runoff from rain and fish waste.

Natural BLAST® can be added at the beginning of your warm season or anytime you begin to notice small amounts of floating green organic matter. This product also can be added to a pond after a significant rain event or when temperatures suddenly spike, and you should continue to treat with AquaSpherePRO® every 30 days. When it comes to beneficial bacteria, you cannot overtreat the water, but you can undertreat, so it’s always best to have a bit more product than you need. Both AquaSpherePRO® and Natural BLAST® are veterinarian-approved and safe for fish, wildlife, pets and people.

Of course, in some areas of the country, we recommend pond treatment with AquaSpherePRO® (and Natural BLAST® when needed) throughout the year, but if you do live in an area where pond water temperatures stay below 45 degrees for a consistent period, you might only need to treat your water six or eight months of the year.

Our map below serves as a general treatment guide, but keep in mind that an early or late spring (or an early or late winter) can necessitate changes to this treatment schedule.

If your pond already has an abundance of organic floating plant matter, we recommend using our RUSH® product. RUSH® improves water quality in stagnant ponds by eliminating heavily matted, floating organic matter on the surface of the pond. RUSH® enhances the nutrient-consumption activity of our beneficial bacteria product AquaSpherePRO® and accelerates the decomposition of the floating organic matter.

Small Water Feature Treatments

If you have a birdbath or fountain, early spring is a perfect time to get these items cleaned and filled with fresh water. Simply remove any standing water, scrub with a high-quality brush, rinse and add fresh water.

You also can clean out the birdbath or fountain using a mix of about one part vinegar to nine parts of freshwater, as harsh chemicals, bleach and soap aren’t necessary and aren’t safe for creatures such as birds, butterflies, dragonflies and other sweet creatures that might enjoy your water features.

Once you’ve filled the birdbath or fountain with fresh water, drop in a dispenser filled with a packet of our All-Purpose Water Cleaner. Each packet dispenses safe, all-natural beneficial bacteria into the water for up to 30 days. At the end of 30 days, just add a new packet into your dispenser. While the bacteria will consume excess nutrients in the water, it is still a good idea to skim away leaves and debris from the water feature whenever you spot them.

We have beneficial bacteria products for just about any size water feature, from tiny fishbowls with just a gallon or two of water up to small lakes. We have products specially designed for birdbaths, fountains, rain barrels, stock tanks, aquariums, small decorative ponds and koi ponds. No matter what size of water feature you have, we have an all-natural beneficial bacteria product that will help you keep the water clean and healthy.
