They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and when it comes to pond care, this is definitely true. At Healthy Ponds, our goal is to provide our customers with easy pond care treatments that prevent many common pond issues. Let’s take a quick look at AquaSpherePRO® and how this product can help keep your pond water balanced.
What Is AquaSpherePRO®?
The AquaSpherePRO® is an all-natural, time-released dispensing system that introduces beneficial bacteria into your pond water. The AquaSpherePRO® works best when used before problems arise in a pond. Each biodegradable sphere is filled with beneficial bacteria for ponds, and once you toss the sphere into the water, it begins releasing the bacteria over the course of 30 days.
These bacteria consume excess nutrients and break down organic matter that clouds the water. In many cases, if you consistently add new spheres every 30 days, this microbial treatment may be all you need to do to keep your pond water healthy and balanced.
This proactive treatment can prevent the growth of organic matter in your pond, and all you need to do is toss in enough spheres to accommodate the approximate number of gallons of water in your pond. It is important to add enough spheres as you don’t want to undertreat the water, so we recommend that you round up when calculating your pond size.
You cannot overtreat the water, so if you have a bit more beneficial bacteria than you need, this will not harm the water or any fish or wildlife. Our beneficial bacteria are veterinarian-approved and safe for fish, wildlife, livestock, pets and people. This is an environmentally-friendly easy pond treatment that contains no chemicals, which is always the best option to consider, whenever possible.
Is AquaSpherePRO® All You Need?
In some cases, treating water AquaSpherePRO® can be enough to prevent common pond issues, such as the accumulation of floating green organic matter, but often a supplement is needed to give the water a bit of a boost. We always recommend having a supply of Natural Blast® on hand to help remediate issues quickly as they spring up.
Natural Blast® is another safe, microbial treatment that can be used at the beginning of your warm season to give your water a bit of a jumpstart. Natural Blast® also can be used as a proactive treatment when the temperature spikes or your area experiences heavy rainfall. Warmer temperatures and excess rain can cause the rapid accumulation of floating organic matter and cause oxygen levels to drop in your pond. Using Natural Blast® along with AquaSpherePRO® can prevent this from occurring.
Anytime you start to notice the presence of floating organic matter, we recommend continuing to treat with the AquaSpherePRO®, but also adding Natural Blast®. You can repeat Natural Blast® treatments every seven to ten days, as necessary. To use this easy pond maintenance product, just toss enough of the water-soluble bags of Natural Blast® to accommodate the number of gallons in your pond.
The Importance of Pond Aeration
Pond aeration is crucial, as this prevents oxygen levels from dropping in your pond. Low oxygen levels can lead to fish kills, but even in ponds with no fish, low oxygen levels can lead to the rapid growth of floating organic matter. Treatment with microbial products (AquaSpherePRO® and Natural Blast®) requires oxygen to establish bioremediation.
If your pond has low oxygen levels, the pond water should be treated with a water oxygenator before adding microbial treatments. Any pond with fish should have a mechanical aeration system in place, but even if you don’t have fish, this is highly recommended. Circulating the water properly can help maintain oxygen levels and keep temperatures down during the hottest months of the year.
The aeration system you install should be powerful enough to circulate all of the gallons of water in your pond at least twice per day. It’s usually best to purchase a system that is slightly more powerful than you need. You also need to choose between a surface aeration system and a bottom diffusion aeration system. Typically, we recommend the bottom diffusion systems, especially with a deeper pond.
With proper aeration as well as the use of our easy pond care products, you can maintain a healthy pond throughout the year with little effort. All three of these treatments – aeration, monthly use of AquaSpherePRO® and supplement treatment with Natural Blast®, should prevent most common pond problems.
